Really really liked this dance. Honestly.
ReplyDeleteI think that comes from a very "just have fun" atmosphere and the novelty of the color portion
of dance. A lot of my friends at the dance also said that they would come back again next time and expressed their satisfaction/praise!
I personally really liked the music (I thought all of it was danceable and there were a lot of 'classics'). "Teach me how to dougie" and ending with the Cha Cha slide were both fantastic choices. Woot Ian! (Honestly I don't think anyone noticed that the DJ was just an ASB representative either, so maybe that's a possibility for future events if we're looking to cut down on costs?)
The only downside in my opinion was the lack of attendance, especially from upperclassmen. I don't think that this detracted from the event, but it's just a room for improvement. Suggestions for next time: have some sort of group incentive to buy tickets! (If you come in a group of 3+, you each get an extra color packet). I think that despite how much promotion asb does, the most significant determiner of attendance would be peer pressure. Let's figure out some innovative ways to get people to bring friends!
Another ballpark idea that came up during the dance: what if you assigned each class a "color"? And then halfway through the dance, the DJ interacts with the crowd and organized a "color competition" of some sort, where the classes try to spread their color as much as possible. I think that with the color dance, DJ interaction can make the event so much more. (Plus, the idea of class competition might excite some people! It's easier for people to pitch the idea to their friends when all they have to say is "you better be there to help our class")
If we're thinking about event longevity, I think that we should let people do the promotion for us. When you see pictures on social media of people covered in color, smiling, you're intrigued! What if after the color dance next year, you encouraged everyone to post their pictures on the event page, and then from those submissions a raffle would be drawn for xxx (free tickets to the next dance). OR you could challenge people to post their most creative colored pictures, and then the winners get a special prize!
Just ideas :)
Again, really awesome event and great execution.
Looking forward to next year!
The idea behind the dance was awesome and I think it was really fun for the first 2 hours or so, ESPECIALLY for the freshmen (naturally, because they made up 80% of the population there and therefore had friends to throw color at).
ReplyDeleteHowever, as Will said, the upperclassmen attendance was an issue, mainly because the upperclassmen who did come couldn't really have as great of an experience. In fact, that's more or less what I was thinking for some portions of the dance as I volunteered / threw color at people: "this is fun, but IF there were more 2016ers here, this would be awesome." I think a lot more personalized social media promotion with pictures from this year (hopefully next year's ASB members will have attended the color dance this year) will help draw attention to the event for upperclassmen (who are less easily sold on new ideas); posting the same pictures can only help so much.
I also think it might be a good idea to have the dance be a little shorter and possibly start a little later (if at the same time of year); I know it's harder to see your friends when it's darker, but honestly, everyone gets more hyped and willing to let go and have fun once it's dark. The dance dragged on a bit and people started to leave during the last 30-45 minutes too. Having the dance start at 7:30 or even 8 and end at 10 should solve both of those issues.
As a general thought, we should probably make sure we have some security/police posted at the front gate to watch out for suspicious behavior (like we do at other dances), as someone was robbed during the dance.
But aside from those things, I thought the dance was a blast and a GREAT start for a new event; the DJ'ing from Tech was solid as well. Lookin forward to Color Dance 2016 B-)

First off, great work! Though I did not go to the color dance, all of the work you did making all of the color bags and holding the dance was amazing.
ReplyDeleteThere were a few things that I thought could have been a bit better. First was the advertising. Some of the people that I talked to we confused about what they were going to do at the dance, you could try a promo video for a new dance like this. Also the date in which the dance was held conflicted with many different things. ex: Cheer leading, Silsila, the was a drama production but they moved it.
But overall I thought that the work that you put into it was great, you should continue this event
Nice work
More Thoughts + Thoughts from Mrs. Badger and Mrs. Boehm:
ReplyDelete1) Water waste-- I believe Mrs. Badger said she was going to have a discussion with Mr. Tuana about this; since the drought isn't going away soon, this is definitely going to be an ongoing issue. As much as I like the idea of having a repeat color dance next year, this is a very legitimate point.
It's also important to note that the custodians (I believe it was them) were cleaning up color the next morning anyways once it was brighter and the remaining color residue was visible. Mrs. Badger suggested that it might be easier to just wait till the morning, but we obviously would have to get this settled with Chinese School well beforehand (in case they had a Quad event planned for that Saturday).
2) Having colored powder covering the cash box (for selling individual packets) and the money was an issue for Mrs. Boehm. Mrs. Badger suggested selling tickets at a "no-color zone" and having people pick up their color packets at another table, which I think is a good idea. In general, I guess there needs to be more done to regulate where people can throw color (fenced-off area??) than taped off areas on the ground (I think most people missed that).
In other words (although it seems unnecessary), we would probably need a minimum of 3 stations/tables: one for entrance, one for selling tickets for buying additional tickets, and one for exchanging those tickets for color packets.
3) (My own thoughts) Timing was an issue as well, of course, with Silsilay rehearsals and general preparations disabling many people from attending the dance.
I'm REALLY happy with the way this dance went. I think it went really well for a first time event and there weren't a lot of mishaps like during previous dances.
ReplyDeleteAttendance: Not bad, but the skew towards underclassmen makes me think that this would make a great link crew dance/event at the beginning of the year.
Atmosphere: For the first two hours or so, no one danced, but everyone was just playing around like we were in 5th grade, throwing color at one another. During the last hour, people started dancing, which was good.
Music: A + Everyone enjoyed the mix, especially the electric slide.
Safety: I heard there was some illicit activities going on in the den during the dance, so we should find away to close the den off to everyone other than ASB students, and ASB students should be under strict orders not to let anyone in.
Clean up: Took a while but it was definitely worth it
Overall, great event social! MAJOR props to everyone that helped out! :)
I think this dance was very successful.
ReplyDeleteThe attendees who went to the dance seemed to have a good time!
I think now dances are no longer dances. By trying to bring in a population of students who don't normally come to dances, and who don't like to dance, we have ostracized and repelled the portion of the student body who dances. The upperclassmen that I have talked to seems to think this is a reason to not go to a dance (because nobody dances)
Even with the Junior Prom website, there is a slight undertone that teenage dancing will make others feel awkward and is discouraged.
A dance is a dance. Just not many people dance, because it's shrouded in mystery and is considered Taboo and looked down upon by the administration.
This "Dance" was basically a color battle, accompanied by music. I feel like it went a little long, as the novelty and excitement wore off, even when Asb students passed out the extra color 2 hours in.
Wills idea about the color dance having class colors assigned is a great one, and worth pursuing in the future.
I thought this dance was a HUGE success in terms of the number of people who were satisfied with the dance. From what I noticed, if you came, you had fun and you would certainly come back next year.
ReplyDeleteI personally knew people didn't want to come because they thought it would be "lame" but the people who showed up realized how fun it was. There were a lot of freshmen at the dance with is good for the future because they will be able to spread the word, as sophomores, about how fun the dance was.
The overall dance was pretty fun but there wasn't really anyone dancing. This always seems to be an issue at dances but the music was REALLY good at this dance. Everyone really liked the music overall.
For the future, maybe we should use a different type of promotion because people thought that you just go to the dance and throw color for 3 hours. Also, the t-shirts were a really good idea but it happened too late. Next time we should wear the t-shirts a couple of days before the dance because by the time we wore the t-shirts, people already had plans for their Friday.
Overall, this was a really great event that should definitely be done again! Props for starting something new and making it a success!

I REALLY enjoyed this dance!
ReplyDeleteWhat I liked:
-Appealed to a whole new student group (underclassmen, freshmen who normally wouldn't come)
-REALLY fun atmosphere (murdering friends with color)
-Promo with tshirts!!
Things to think about/improve:
-Wasn't really so much of a "dance", it was more of a color fight -- didn't appeal to upperclassmen, dancing didnt get started until 1.5 hours in
-Novelty of color wore off around halfway into the dance, some people got tired of it
I think in the future, now that people know what it's like, they'll be more inclined to go!
I enjoyed the dance-- definitely something different.
ReplyDelete1) I would love to see this as an IDC event. A lot people made new friends, and there were a lot of guests as well.
2) Perhaps more activities? I know there are color launchers.. hopefully we can look into that.
3) Student DJs were great. No one could even tell.
4) It would have been awesome to get more media or documentation. Maybe next time we could get some videos so that all the people who didn't come would feel jealous. :)
5) Sell the color for discounts? If we end up expanding this, then cheaper prices for ASB?
Great job, guys! Clean up was hard and tiring, but I hope it was worth it.
