Link Crew Dance Debrief

Hi guys!

We would like to get some feedback from the link crew dance last week. Thanks to everyone who came and supported/helped out, we really appreciate it.

Be sure to include:

  • What you liked and why you liked it
  • Things that could be improved and how they could be improved.
All feedback is appreciated and we hope you had just as much fun as we did!

<3,

  1. I THOUGHT IT WAS SUPER FUN. It felt just like a middle school dance - no freaking, just good, clean fun. I'm not sure how you guys could make all dances like this because freaking is pretty much a given at dances. I don't remember the last time I had that much fun at a dance, and I have a lot of fun making waffles. I don't have any complaints about the DJ.

    Things to improve:
-playing ping pong in the dark was pretty hard
-miscommunication between ASB Social, Link Crew, and the classes. People were under the impression that food would be free, so a lot of people didn't bring money.

But other than that, I thought it was wildly successful. Good job!!

  2. I actually really enjoyed this dance!! Good music and clean dancing (y)

    Things to improve:
-Starting set up a bit earlier? I know we ran out of time and probably didn't get to finish a lot of what we had planned to
    -More communication about food sales
-Maybe close off a section of the school? I'm not sure if we meant to leave the gates open or not but some people were walking off around the school which got kind of scary as it got darker

All in all, good thing to try, I hope we'll see more of it in the coming years :)

  3. Pros:
-DJ was good, and didn't play any non-danceable songs
-really high attendance from freshmen. I was a little worried it would be just Link Crew leaders and ASB
-BREAK DANCE circles. I swear these were the best parts of middle school dances and it was just really fun to have them back

    Things to improve:
-lack of communication between ASB/Link Crew. I personally didn't bring money because I had heard food would be free, and I know a lot of others didn't either
-we were setting up until the very last second because of the giant maypole, and I don't think that added very much to the appeal of the dance at all, other than being a safety hazard.

Great job social- definitely an event to repeat!

  4. I think one great way of getting some comparative feedback for this event is to ask MV how their Link Crew Dance went (which I can do with Anna, the ASB President there) -- we got the idea from Monta Vista, and since the dance has been going on there for a couple of years (if not more), we could get a better perspective on how our first dance went.

Purpose 1 of the event: To show that ASB's events are safe and fun, to bolster our reputation
How we did: I'm sure I have personal bias because I had the time of my life (throwback to 2009), but I think that we achieved our goal of giving freshmen a fun, safe environment. As previous posters said, no grinding, no nothing. However, on random polling of some of the freshmen that I talked to throughout the past week, it seems like they still thought "Miller dances were better". I think that Saif needs to come in here and tell us a) what the core differences are between our dances and Miller's and b) give us an idea of what we can do to either fill the gap or attract freshmen in another way.

Purpose 2 of the event: Attract freshmen to the Welcome Back Dance and wipe out the reputation as the "Freshman Rape Dance"
How we did: The idea that this is "freshman rape" is slowly (very slowly) dying out, so huge props to social for being the vehicle of cultural change! As for numbers, we'll have to see once we can get them from Mrs. Boehm.

All in all, you definitely have your naysayers, but Social, you are one hell of a commission!!

  5. I'm so glad that there was clean dancing...I think having the link crew dance kind of shows freshman what a high school dance is like without overwhelming them with the rumors they hear about the welcome back dance :$

I think it was a really good idea because you had just freshmen and their leaders and ASB together, which was friendly and fun and not too much to handle (not too many people) Seeing how the Link Crew dance wasn't too intimidating, hopefully they're more likely to come to dances in the future! C:

but piggybacking on what sophia said, maybe we should close off a part of the school because people kind of started just wandering around?

but definitely keep having this dance! great work social :)

+ thank god there was a photobooth - that made my life <3

  6. Although it must have been a lot more work from the Social Commission (woohoo y'all are great), I think it definitely paid off. I love the idea of a clean dance where freshmen can get comfortable with the Lynbrook environment as a class before getting to know the community (which could super intimidating). Their comfort with dances definitely shows too, since a lot of freshmen came to the Welcome Back Dance! I had a great time. :)

    Improvements:
-Advertising that only the dance is free, not the food! (and advertising earlier too, if that's possible! Many of the freshmen had no idea about the dance until they were called by Link Crew Leaders so they didn't have enough time to reschedule prior commitments)
-Hold the dance in the quad, it got really stuffy inside of the gym so a lot of people had to come out
-Maybe some more games for people who aren't really into dancing (Welcome Back from last year had a lot of really great arcade games)
-Maypole was a little bit iffy, I felt like it looked pretty cool but a lot of people were confused by its purpose since it was randomly in the very middle of the gym.
-Like what Hima said, lack of communication between Link and ASB.

Great idea and executed very well, especially for a first try. Congrats! :)

  7. I heard a lot of people had a great time. Talking to the few freshmen that went, they were kind of scared of the kind of dancing that highschoolers did but after they went to the Link Crew dance, they were kind of relieved. The photobooth as always was wonderful as everybody always likes it

    Things that could be improved:
-The advertisement: some information on who should go and who shouldn't go was kind of miscommunicated and I know this one person who didn't get to go because they thought they weren't invited and had previous arrangements
-There were a lot of confusions on the food sales

But overall, it was a blast!!

  8. As many people have said, the link crew dance is probably the most fun I have had in a long long time. It was great to see a Lynbrook dance replicate the innocence of middle school. Definitely a dance I would recommend next year's ASB, Link Crew, and Social to do!

  9. I think the Link Crew dance was definitely a fun dance. Everyone was dancing and by the end of the dance, the freshmen seemed to really enjoy the dance. I think the photobooth was extremely popular just because there were so many props and it was great.
Improvements: -As many people said, there was a lack of communication between Link and ASB. As a Link Leader, I was told that food was free and I only found out later that food was not free.
-Like Sophia and Jessica mentioned, I think maybe it would be better to close off a section of the school to the dance (like the welcome back dance). Since people were not always dancing in the gym, there were people roaming around and it wasn't easy to keep track of people.

Overall, I really enjoyed the dance though and I think it's a great event to repeat. Congratulations Social!!

  10. This was definitely a lot of fun. Assuming the primary intention was to reassure the freshmen and give them some comfort in Lynbrook, this definitely achieved its goal. It also succeeded in providing some good old fashioned middle school era fun. Overall, I definitely enjoyed it and it seemed like most of the people there were as well.

    "Improvements:"
    1) I wasn't too sure on the guidelines on whether the dance was public or only open to Link Crew Leaders/ASB/Freshmen. Since this is a specifically Link Crew dance, there should probably be clearer instructions on whether the dance is public to all students or not; I noticed people being "checked in" on a list near the beginning of the dance to ensure they were LC leaders, but later on random students would just wander in with no consequence. I think it's fine either way, but the message should be clear and consistent among both ASB and Link Crew. Perhaps more communication between the two parties in general is key.

    2) If it IS supposed to be just for ASB/freshmen/Link Crew, then a section of the school should definitely be closed off (as others have stated above).

  11. Pros: I thought that this was a great dance for the freshmen. They were able to experience what a high school dance was like. Also many really enjoyed the dance and I think it was a good transition. The photobooth and ping pong table were also great additions for those who did not want to dance. Also I think this dance being free was an incentive for freshmen to come.

Cons: I think the rope decoration was distracting and a lot of people fell. I also think it would be good to have other activities, possibly games run by link crew leaders/ASB officers. This way the freshmen are able to really interact with the upperclassmen as well as do other activities other than dancing.

  12. For the time that I was there, it looked like people were having a great time, especially the link crew leaders. They were really encouraging which contributed to the experience. I like the fact that they could go out and talk to their friends as well.

Something to look into would be having a suggestions form for things to sell. It's nice knowing what people would like to eat since the price is usually reduced toward the end. A photo opp with their link crew teams might have been cute as well. Although we can't afford this, maybe giving them something for attending would make them feel more welcomed.

Overall, great job! Everyone had a great smile on their face.

  13. During Link Crew orientation, many of the freshmen in my group had reservations about high school dances because of prior rumors, but the Link Crew dance definitely delivered! I'm glad that there was no freaking because I'm sure many of them would have found it deterring. Also, I think this a good indication that we can expect great participation from the class of 2018!

The only thing I would change would be the length of the dance. The dance felt very short to me (1.5 hours); 2-3 hours would be much better.

Overall, the Link Crew dance seemed like a great way to kick off the school year and I would love to see this become a regular event!

  14. Feedback to improve on(for all dances)

Sorry if these have been said before.

    1) We should check in with sports/other school activities about their usage of the school facilities. If we had known that cheer-leading was using the cove, we might have been able to work something out, but b/c the cove was occupied, we had to leave the gates wide open for students to wander around.

    2) The process for checking out/leaving the dance should be more clear. Some freshmen who wanted to leave early didn't know where to go, who to approach about leaving.

    3) Communication to class should be more clear! We suffocated from the lack of link crew kids who actually brought money, and our respective fundraisers were nowhere near as successful as they could have been.

The dance had a great atmosphere though, and I think this is an event that should become tradition. Let's do it again next year!
