Last week we had a Holiday Spirit Week. Could you please comment:
- whether the event was well-received
- whether people actually dressed up
- the dilemma over sweater day/hat day mixup
- whether we should have holiday (december) spirit week in general
Please be honest, and thank you for your feedback!!
Love,
ASB Spirit
I think the spirit week was a good idea but the execution was a little bit confusing. I think the main problem was the sweater/hat day confusion because not everyone knew about it. Also, I don't think that many people dressed up in general because it was raining so much :( Also, I don't remember hearing anything on the announcements for the first few days!
ReplyDeleteI think next time if ASB does a holiday spirit week, there shouldn't be any changes to it and we should definitely consider the weather! - Divyya
Pros
ReplyDelete.Easy to dress to
.Weather helped us force ppl to comply for ex-sweater day/hatday
.Great attitude for the most part
.PJ day was another big hit
Cons
.We now have an #antilhsspirit so that's the best feeling in the world(not)
.We need to be informed if there is a change in our event, it was disheartening to see that we were notified of a change in our own event AFTER the change had been carried out.We were not even asked about our opinion on the matter which made us feel a little powerless in planning our own events.
.By suddenly changing a thing like spirit day we lose credibility, although we were all for staff involvement, if we were able to plan it a month in advance, teachers could have told told us earlier too.
.With all this change happening its essential that we carry it out successfully, first the anti spirit squad then what? antiasb? at the end of the we have to stick together by our decisions and help each other.Just like we all held the sophomore backdrop from tearing we have to make sure that we back our events and our decisions as a class;together.
Pros:
ReplyDelete-All the spirit days events were well picked, but i feel like formal day was kind of hard because the weather was so cold??
-good idea to have this spirit week right before finals
-pajama day was a really popular
Some things to improve on!
-some people were confused if the events were all holiday themed or just in general
-clarify some of the days, like was sweater day ugly sweater day or just any sweater (related to bullet point above)
-it's super awesome that you guys are thinking of these spirit weeks, but i think if leadership gets a headsup up earlier, we can start telling people because not that many people knew about spirit week
-not sure if you guys had this, but a hashtag #lhsspirit and maybe a prize for people who posted a picture of each day with their spirit because some people need that extra push to show spirit
-the pictures on instagram are also promo for the event!!
Pros:
ReplyDelete-Well thought out theme and individual spirit days
-Pajama day :D
-The facebook cover picture was beautiful
Cons:
-I think it was pretty unfortunate that sweater day and hat day had to get switched because I know a lot of people got confused. Maybe ask the staff prior to telling the school
-Not a lot of people knew about it
-Weather :( unfortunately couldn't be helped
Overall, it was really well thought out and easy to dress to. Next time maybe just start to promote it a little bit earlier and collaborate with the staff beforehand. Good job!
Spirit week was well planned out and it would have been fantastic had everyone participated. Unfortunately, the gloomy weather and finals took away students' holiday spirits and willingness to dress up. This was in no way spirit's fault though. You guys thought of great, simple ways to dress up, and you guys handled switching hat and sweater day beautifully. However, I feel like if we promo'd a little earlier there would be more general awareness about spirit week. Overall, good job spirit!
ReplyDeletePros:
ReplyDelete-It was a good idea to have a holiday spirit week during December!
-Pajama Day was probably the best one, as usual!
-Facebook cover photo was very well done
-the hashtag #lhsspirit was used a lot more this time
Cons:
-Promos were done pretty late. I did not realize there was a spirit week until a couple of days before.
-Teachers were not at all aware of the spirit week until they came to school on Monday
-Switching the days was confusing but that was not really spirit's fault. At the same time, I think we should check in with the staff before planning spirit days so that there is no room for confusion.
-I don't know if a spirit week before finals is the best idea. Most people are too stressed to actually participate so maybe two weeks before finals is a better idea?
Overall, great job Spirit! You guys were able to pull through all the troubles that were thrown at you and the event went well :)
Pros:
ReplyDelete-overall I'm a huge fan of having a december spirit week
-i liked the cover photo and the fact that it didn't coincide with WF promo (cause that's gonna be a yearly struggle)
cons:
-I feel like in the past 2 years our spirit days have been a lot less creative than before. I remember when I was in 8th grade there were all these fun spirit days at lynbrook like "would you still be my friend if i wore this to school" day and things like that...I get that the generic spirit days are easier, but even coming up with a fun day for them makes them more fun
-A freshman officer chatted me asking if this spirit week counted for class points so you may wanna clarify that haha
-promo the hashtag more!! Also keep using your instagram I think it's a great way to reach out to the #grammers of the world!!
-agreeing with shruti, I think having it before finals is tough. Last year I would've loved this but honestly this year every night I was focusing so much on work that I didn't have my usual "pick out a cute outfit" time every night LOL
-as said many times, the switching was confusing
-honestly, I think we should stop trying to push the teachers to participate. If they want to, great. If they don't, that's fine too.
-promo, promo, promo... people chatted me saying that they had no idea about this spirit week at all... I think even we found out like a week beforehand (maybe it was a rushed decision, idk?) but we really need to try and promo things like these earlier. At least 2-3 weeks in advance would be good. MORE PROMO=MORE PARTICIPATION!
The big thing was the weather which obviously could not be controlled, and even for me was one of the biggest reasons I didn't participate as much as usual...it was too cold and gloomy. I think the first week of December is better for this spirit week.
I liked the spirit week overall but I think my main problem with it was the weather, coinciding with the big storm and whatnot. Especially for formal day, I was more concerned about the weather than dressing up (although I liked that hat/sweater/color day didn't really require a lot). Also, honestly, who can pass up pajama day? I agree that because the staff sweater/hat day switch was very sudden, the ASB class as a whole should've helped out a little more to post reminders on fb, etc to advertise change. Promo should've probably started a little bit earlier like announcements or an earlier schoolloop blast because I heard a bunch of my classmates in my first couple of periods saying they didn't know it was pajama day and that it was a shame because they really wanted to wear their pajamas to school!!
ReplyDeleteOverall though, the spirit days were well thought out (besides maybe holiday color day) and we should definitely have it again next December, just maybe watch out for the weather forecast and run it by Ms. Badger carefully to make sure there aren't any conflicts. And more promo!!!
This spirit week was very poorly done. Coming from ASB Spirit I fully own this and will talk about it in the debrief.

ReplyDeleteHi Spirit!
ReplyDeleteI thought the spirit was very thoughtful. The days were easy to participate in, and appropriate for the entire student body.
One thing to definitely improve on would be communication. For one thing, changing sweater day should have been done earlier when the week was improved. In addition, it would be helpful to be able to communicate with student body about the spirit week in advance. Sending out an email in advance or having teachers communicate the change in the classroom may be the way to go!
Good luck, spirit!
I think that most people have already brought up the major pros/cons, I would just bring up a few new things and my thoughts on what's already been said:
ReplyDelete-Incentive: I think that with it being the week before finals, cold, and with a general feeling of contempt going around for Lynbrook, people aren't going to dress up by themselves for the sake of spirit. It'd be nice if there was some "come to the top of the quad to collect some ____", but I don't know if that would have been effective either, to be honest.
-Timing: I'd disagree with a lot of the people who said that this was a good week for a spirit week -- personally (speaking as a student and stressed senior), I'd much rather have nothing go on so that I can focus on my classes. And I think that mentality was clearly shared, seeing how many people didn't dress up or simply didn't care.
-Hat vs. Sweater: I think that the switch of spirit days really didn't/in general doesn't matter. Why? Because the people who want to dress up will dress up. The people who don't want to absolutely won't. The goal is to get the "middle" people to show spirit -- and with the spirit week being so low of a priority for most students, it didn't matter what day was what.
-Promo: Promoting something to increase participation works when it's relevant to the student body -- I just think the timing for this rules out any sort of "we could have had more participation if we had more promo" argument.
Great lessons for next year. But you guys rock for putting it on and always thinking of how to help the student body!!
Pro:
ReplyDelete-Easy to dress to
-Not too complicated
-Festive, in with the holidays
Cons:
-A bit confusing with the whole hat day/holiday mix up
Pros:
ReplyDelete-I liked that the themes for each day were simple, so that people could easily find something to wear
-spirit weeks during the winter are always good
Suggestions:
-Maybe move it up a week? Definitely felt like a lot of people didn't care/want to dress up right before finals
-Plan out promo more in advance, so that we can tell the school over announcements as well
-Do something to incentivize the students. Passing out candy canes at the top of the quad to everyone who is dressed up is simple, but it's possibly a way to get some more people to dress up.
Pros:
ReplyDelete-I loved the idea! And the spirit days were super simple and easy to dress to
-People could easily dress to the weather
Cons:
-weather
-a week before finals so not many people decided to dress up
-we should have promoted it earlier, so more people know
-I really like the idea of incentives and giving out candycanes to those who dress up
